Excerpt: Students Take to Spotlight
Rick Aurand is a pilot for Federal Express. He also happens to be deaf. He is answering questions from two students at the Susquehanna Township Middle School about growing up deaf, his family, and his job. One student is operating a video camera, another is
in charge of camera lights, and a third is taking photographs. The audience of classmates, teachers, and parents is spellbound.
Rick is one of more than a dozen deaf and hard-of-hearing adults who have been invited to the school as part of The Spotlight Program created in 1993 by teachers Kathleen Eich and Karen Ruddle. The teachers wanted to improve students' communication skills, including reading, writing, and oral and sign ability.
