Happy fall, and welcome to the inaugural issue of the DVS® E-Guide! I hope you and your families have had a wonderful summer and that fall finds you happy, healthy and ready for a fall full of new described programs, films and home video releases. Read on for updates about what's coming throughout the next several months.

Again, I want to thank those DVS Guide readers who gave us their feedback regarding this new E-Guide. And I hope that all of you will continue to share your thoughts - positive or negative - with us in the future so that we can enhance upcoming issues. Look for the next hard copy of the DVS Guide in January 2003 and the next electronic DVS E-Guide in April 2003. CBS and Fox Series Return with Description This Fall

This fall, a variety of prime-time and kids' series return to CBS and Fox with video description for viewers who are blind or visually impaired - provided by the Media Access Group at WGBH. Funding for the description is provided by CBS, the Fox Broadcasting Company and the U.S. Department of Education. Tune in these popular described shows:

New Film Releases Coming to Accessible Theaters Near You...
As MoPix installations pop up across the country, more accessible theatrical films are being released than ever before! The following feature films are either now playing - or are coming soon - to a MoPix-equipped theater in your area. (Titles and release dates are subject to change).

First "Talking" DVD Wins Industry Award

The fully accessible DVD of "Abraham and Mary Lincoln: A House Divided" - a popular presidential biography from PBS's American Experience - was honored at the recent DVD L.A. Fest in Los Angeles for its innovative audio navigation. The first of its kind, the deluxe DVD won a "DVD at Its Best Gold Ring Award" for its "talking menu" feature, which enables viewers who are blind or visually impaired to access the DVD's features through audible menus. The award-winning, three-disc package also includes description and captioning services for viewers with vision and hearing loss, surround sound, exclusive interviews with producer/director David Grubin and others, original narratives drawn from historic letters and diaries, and other special features and content.

The audio navigation feature was developed by the Media Access Group at WGBH with funding provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Description for Kids... Turn It On!

With funding from the U.S. Department of Education through a Children's Programming Description grant, the Media Access Group has published print and braille versions of an outreach piece called "ABC's of DVS". Developed for parents, educators and caregivers, the piece points to the educational benefits of description and offers a list of described programs and home videos described by WGBH. Media Access Group Launches Its New Enhanced Web Site

The Media Access Group Web site has always been the best resource for information and updates on description and captioning services, and the latest accessible releases on television, video and film. New Holiday Releases from DVS "Ho-Ho-Home" Video...

Looking for the perfect holiday gift for the movie buff in your life? DVS Home Video presents some great new titles, which will be available to order this November. (Titles and release dates are subject to change).

  • Bridget Jones's Diary (Disney): This romantic comedy features Oscar-nominee Ren~ee Zellweger as Bridget Jones - a fun-loving, 30-something Brit who can't find the right man. Co-stars Hugh Grant and Colin Firth complete the film's hilarious love triangle.
  • Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (Warner Bros.): Sandra Bullock, Ellen Burstyn, Ashley Judd and Maggie Smith star in this comedy/drama about a modern-day mother-daughter rift and how enduring friendships and childhood secrets help to repair it.
  • Insomnia (Warner Bros.): Set in a small Alaskan town, this crime thriller stars Al Pacino and Hilary Swank as detectives trying to crack a local murder, while Robin Williams gives a creepy performance as the chief suspect.
  • Lilo and Stitch (Disney): In this creative animated feature from Disney, a young Hawaiian
