WGBH in the Community

In a city that boasts some of the world's most respected educational and cultural institutions, WGBH is proud to play a part in nurturing the life of our community. Serving local audiences is at the heart of what we do (especially since we're Boston's last "locally owned," independent TV station and the first homegrown public radio station on Cape Cod and the Islands).
On the air and online, we shine the spotlight on the people and issues right in our own backyard. You'll find us out and about, from the Lowell Folk Festival to the Boston Symphony Orchestra, recording live performances. Or helping teachers around town make the most of our educational resources. Or tapping the expertise of university professors and music mavens all around New England. Some of our partnerships go back 50 years; others spring from our coverage of today's lively cultural scene. They result in screenings, forums, panel discussions, and just-plain-fun events like our annual Ice Cream FunFest. A vibrant Community Advisory Board helps us keep our finger on the pulse of the communities we serve.
'GBHers always are thinking outside the box, and outside the walls of our Western Ave. facilities, working with our neighbors in Boston's Allston-Brighton community. We collaborate with the Allston Board of Trade on a blood drive and with Brighton High School on a scholarship program. Our toy drive for local schoolchildren brightens our holiday season each year, and we support the Allston-Brighton Food Pantry with an annual collection.
Giving back to the communities that support us is a 'GBH tradition: this year's WGBH Cares campaign netted $75,000 in support of Community Works and the United Way of Massachusetts Bay.
