Frontline has never shied away from tough, controversial issues. For 20 years, WGBH's award-winning public affairs documentary series has offered hard-hitting perspectives on the events of our times. After September 11, no one was better positioned to examine the issue of terrorism than Frontline, with its extensive network of international contacts, access, and experience. "Frontline's series...is a primer on the mind of a terrorist," says David Klatell, chair of the duPont-Columbia University Awards jury, which awarded Frontline its top honor: the 2003 Gold Baton. "From the expose´ on Saudi Arabia to the solid background reporting on the hijackers, this reporting prepares us for the post-9/11 world." Frontline continues to address terrorism from all angles, extending the series' impact by putting its research, interviews, and video clips online.
"Keeping Americans informed beyond the headlines is crucial today," says executive producer David Fanning. "But the real test is whether the stories we do matter. They matter when Frontline exposes a miscarriage of justice and helps free a prisoner. They matter when we spark legislative debate on handguns, or when we expose new information and open the eyes of policymakers. And we know our content matters when millions of viewers tune us in and then go to our Web site to learn more."
