Building audiences for the arts is a cornerstone of WGBH's mission of promoting lifelong learning. "We want to expose audiences to the wealth of artistic creation in this region," says Stephanie Stewart, series producer for Greater Boston Arts. "We encourage people to go see live performances, to go see art for themselves." Greater Boston Arts also maintains a robust Web site spotlighting art events around town and providing links to area arts organizations.

WGBH extends the reach of local arts offerings in many other ways. As part of a collaboration with the Boston Jewish Film Festival, WGBH 44 presented Viehjud Levi, an award-winning film about anti-Jewish sentiments in Germany in 1935. "Our goal was twofold," explains WGBH director of programming Ron Bachman. "We wanted to showcase the independent film, and also interest audiences in the Festival. Part of our mission is to partner with and provide a wider stage for the work of outstanding cultural organizations throughout our region, whether it's working with the Boston Lyric Opera to highlight opera and this summer's widely successful Carmen on the Common event or encouraging audiences to check out dancer Bill T. Jones' performance at Mass MOCA." And WGBH Radio is doing its share, broadcasting more than 300 live performances every year from venues across New England.
