Background:
This piece was created by choreographer Dan Wagoner with WGBH's producer/director David Atwood and Dance Workshop Coordinator Nancy Mason. "George's House" was originally broadcast as part of the "Dance for Camera" series. Segments of the work were included in the "Frames of Reference" episode "Dance in Open Spaces" and in "Summer Dances."
Scope:
Includes two 2" masters, a Betacam SP preservation master, and VHS and 3/4" screening copies. Approximately 25 color photographic prints documenting Wagoner and the dancers on location exist.Wagoner's choreography is performed by himself and seven female dancers in and around a small New Hampshire farmhouse. The work is meant to recall Wagoner's Appalachian roots. The women perform mostly sprightly movements, hanging from the windows of the house and running across the lawn and splashing at a nearby waterfall. One scene that takes place with several of the women in the bedroom shifting positions, is more somber and poignant. Wagoner performs a solo at a well.
The bluegrass musical score is by The White Oak Mountain Boys.
The costumes, country garments of colorful dresses, evoke the Appalachian themes.
